And it's going to be fan-freakin'-tastic! The Toronto Comic Arts Festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday and I'll be exhibiting there with my siblings Shaggy and Hes. While maps are still being drawn up for table placement, panels and programming ( [link] )have been announced and I'll be taking part in two live-drawing panels:

SATURDAY at "The Pilot Tavern" (22 Cumberland St)
12:45 – 1:30 – Ed Mirvish Rollerball Derby Draw-Off
For generations the question has gone unanswered: who is better at drawing Toronto discounting legend Ed Mirvish — Australians or Canadians? Three uppity Aussies take on three staunch Canadians in a game-show ink battle for the ages. While they draw, host John Retallick will do his best to distract the contestants, quiz the audience and toss free books every which way. With Sarah Howell, David Blumenstein, Matt Taylor, Katie Shanahan, John Martz, and Brian Fukushima. Moderator: John Retallick

SUNDAY in The Toronto Reference Library (TCAF central)
1:45pm-2:30pm: Kids Comics Quickfire, The Sequel
Part drawing jam, part fast-paced game show! Volunteers from the audience are paired off with (or against) professional cartoonists in a series of fun-filled drawing challenges!  Featuring Jennifer and Matt Holm (Babymouse, Squish), and Andy Runton (Owly). Hosted by Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy).

Having people watch me draw has always made me super uncomfortable so of course I said yes to taking on live-drawing events. Come watch me draw (and squirm) and get over my fear of people in these fun filled creative panels!!

Cheers gang!

Hey folks! If you read my last post "R.I.P Girlamatic?" please disregard it as I've just gotten word from the folks in charge that they're looking into fixing it and making it a bigger better site.

That being said, it's probably time I move on and get my own website built (in progress!), so whenever Girlamatic.com is up again I'll leave the "Shrub Monkey" comic archives there but will post any new updates here on deviantart and on my own website (in progress!)

Hope all is great with you guys, I'm super busy as usual with animation storyboard work, but if you're curious about what I get up to here are a few places I'm more active on the net. Cheers, folks!

Hey guys!

Hope you're all doing great! This is just a quick update about the Shrub Monkeys comic archives. It seems Girlamatic.com has been down for a little while, so instead of Shrub Monkey comics linking back to Girlamatic.com I decided to finally make every comic here the FULL comic. So no more "clicking links to read comics" and popping around the internet, they're all here on deviant art. I also want to add comics #1-20 to the archives, but would anyone happen to know if there's any way to date an update so it DOESN'T end up as your newest update? I'd rather the oldies not be the "newest" in terms of organization. If not I'll just make another folder.

That's about it for today, thanks all! I hope 2012's been good to you! And now back into my animation storyboarding cave... oOOooooo...

Hey gang!

I just wanted to pop in and let you know that my latest comic "Silly Kingdom" (written by my brother Shaggy) is back in stock in our online shop! And as a December special (and to thank you all for your amazing patience) shipping of all books until Jan1 is FREE WORLD WIDE! :star: Silly Kingdom shoppe: [link] :star:

Thanks for checking in and for all your kind comments on my drawings here on DA. I'd like to be more present in responding to all of you, but comic projects and a full-time storyboarding job has eaten into most of my online time. While I may have become a silent lurker, I do pop in to read your lovely notes and messages and am super grateful for them! The best places to get in touch with me these days are by:

I hope this month has been treating you fabulously and that the New Year approaches with lots of motivation and optimism to experience and create amazing things! Or even if you're just catching up on sleep from a crazy busy school/work year then good on ya, you deserve it!

Love and peace!

I cannot thank you guys enough for your support. Sitting at this computer, on the wrong side of two all-nighters, and waiting for a cab to take my siblings and I in the airport makes me very introspective (introspective....? Introspective). Making comics and drawing for fun is what makes me happiest, your comments, support and good vibes makes it all that much sweeter. Thank you for bringing good things into my life and I hope my work continues to do the same to you :)

Okay... coffee time... definitely!

Hey folks! Thank you all so much for your amazing and generous support of my brother Shaggy's and my newest comic project "Silly Kingdom!" With 40 hours still on the clock before funding closes (and a few commission level rewards still available) we've already hit double our original goal and this would not have been made possible without you guys, so a million times, THANK YOU!!!

I'm slaving away putting finishing touches on demo copies we'll be bringing to San Diego comic con, so if you happen to be there swing on by the Flight booth #2235 and check em out!

FLIGHT volume 8 is here!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Flight volume 8 was officially released today and so it marks the end of an eight book run from an anthology that's inspired me since I discovered volume one back in college! Flight itself isn't over, it's moved towards young adult publication with a new series which will go by the name "Flight Explorer", but the original anthology series is now complete.
It's been both a privilege and an honor to have been invited to take part in the final two volumes of Flight.  Huge thanks and congrats go to Kazu Kibuishi who created this series, brought so many amazing artists together, and introduced me to a whole crew of fantastic new friends and inspiring creators. Flight has definitely been a positive force in my life for which I am so very grateful!
In this book, my brother Steven ("Shaggy") Shanahan has written and I've illustrated a short story called "Buttons and Jim: What's Stopping the Gravy Train?" To celebrate the book release I thought I'd share the step by step process of how I create a page from start to finish:
I do my roughs on a wacom cintiq, it's fast and easy to make fixes. At this point I was happy enough with the set up so I printed the pale red "pencils" onto 11x14 Strathmore windpower smooth bristol...
I tighten up the pencils and move on to inking. On this comic for the most part I used a windsor&newton series 7 size 01 brush and super-black speedball india ink. For the character's faces I used micron and prismacolor premier markers, nothing bigger than a size 02.
Now I scan in the finished page, delete the red layer (you can see my tutorial for how this gets done here [link] ) and tidy it up as best I can until I'm ready for...
Colour! I'm no expert on colour so I don't like to get too involved in explaining my process (as I don't think I can teach anyone anything from my method of randomly sliding colour bars around in photoshop).
Final polish! Huge thanks to my artist friend Jason Caffoe for tweaking the page to help things pop!
Print! I have nothing to do with this stage of the game, but I can't wait to get MY HANDS ON THIS BOOK! (that's Jason's hand in the pic). So yes! Flight volume 8 is now available on amazon, in book and comic shoppes, and hopefully soon at your local libraries. So be sure to keep an eye out for it :)
Cheers guys!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For the next couple months I will be open for personal commissions! If you're interested, either note me or send me an email at shanahan.katie(at)gmail.com.  For commercial work please contact me at shanahan.katie(at)gmail.com

All prices are in CANADIAN dollars. Please indicate at the start if you'd like me to mail you the original inked drawing. This will add an extra $5.00 for shipping.

A note about the original drawing: My originals are hand inked on top of a light-coloured printed sketch using orange col-erase pencil, pentel pocket brush (and/or a paintbrush and Speedball Super Black india ink) prismacolor premier marker, pentel fine point correction pen on Strathmore smooth bristol (acid free):

SMALLER COMMISSIONS:

Icons/busts B&W - $20.00 each

Icons/busts COLOUR - $35.00 each

REGULAR COMMISSIONS (on 9x12 bristol):

Single Character, little to no environment B&W inked: $65.00+

Single Character, little to no environment (or a simple colour swatch), digital colour: $90.00+

Full illustration (one character with full environment): $200+

Additional characters: Add $50+

INFO ON PRICING, PAYMENT METHODS, and REVISIONS (the boring but important bits!):

The above set of prices is JUST a guide, they are not set in stone! Prices for each individual piece will vary based off the complexity and time needed.  As the artist I hold the right to charge appropriately for my time and skills.  Changes in price apply to intricately designed or mechanical characters, complexity of posing if more than one character is involved in a piece,  or environments that are more detailed and difficult, such as urban backgrounds.

All prices are in Canadian dollars. I accept payment through paypal and personal cheques. For personal cheques I need to wait until the cheque clears before beginning your commission. I'll email you as soon as I receive and am able to access your cheque. Please email me if you have any questions!

I request that full payment be made upfront as I've been burnt in the past by the rare vanishing commissioner. I do not accept art trades or gift trades. Cold hard cash only please!

I have the right to refuse a commission if the subject matter makes me a little too uncomfortable to draw (overly sexual or crazily violent images). If I know I won't have fun with a piece then it's better for the both of us that I decline.

At each stage of your commission (thumbnails, sketch, ink, colour) I allow one round of revisions where you can let me know everything you'd like me to change to get your commission to a place you are totally happy with! If you request multiple do-overs and revisions we can work that out at an extra fee to be discussed if the need arises.

I'll be posting the final drawing (with a watermark) online for portfolio purposes, but please let me know if you'd like me to hold off in the case of commissioning an image as a surprise gift.

The last time I opened commissions I got swamped like crazy! To ensure that I'm up to date with everyone interested I'll be accepting commissions in 10 commission chunks (everyone after that will be added to my waiting list). If you're in one of my top 10 commission slots it will take me from 1-2 weeks to finish your commission depending where you are in line and how complex your commission is. Let me know if there is a pressing time frame you need your commission by (like a gift for that certain special someone) and I'll work to get yours done as quickly as possible!  I won't ask for payment until you're in my top 10.

WHAT TO SEND WITH YOUR COMMISSION REQUEST!:

Please give me a detailed description (and photo reference if available) of the character and posing you'd like me to draw, and let me know whether you'd like the drawings to be in a more cartoony or more "serious" style!
(cartoony)
(more "serious")

Hey gang! Just wanted to let you know I've updated my website's store with a collection of prints and mini prints left over from my comic convention tour that are now available for purchase online. Send me an email at shanahan(dot)katie(at)gmail.com if anything tickles your fancy! I'll update with new works (including original b&w inked illustrations on bristol) as they become available. STORE: [link]

Hope you all are doing great! The days are getting warmer here in Canada land, and I'm hard at work on a mini comic written by my brother (Shagster Shan) that we're looking to premier at San Diego Comic Con at the end of July (more details to come).

In more comic news: "The Anthology Project: Volume 2" (I have a short coloured story inside this one) is available for purchase off the Anthology Project website [link] and volume 1 was nominated for an EISNER AWARD in the "best anthology" category! I'm hoping to convince the AP gang to let me run on stage and ham it up all over the award if we win at the Eisner Award Ceremony at SDCC (even though I wasn't in volume 1).

And in MORE comic news, "Flight" volume 8 is available for pre-order off Amazon already [link] (though if you get a copy at SDCC the whole whack of us will sign and doodle in it for you). My brother and I have a 14 page full coloured story inside it titled "Buttons and Jim."  Volume 8 is FILLED with gorgeous top notch comic stories, I am so excited for this one to get off the presses, it's going to be brilliant!

... and now! My mini report of exhibiting at TCAF last weekend!

TCAF (The Toronto Comic Arts Festival to it's friends) once a biannual show, is now held every year at the Toronto Reference Library, and it is free and open to everyone! The floors were jam packed with crowds of curious onlookers and it was the first time I've ever experienced a line up of awesome people wanting to come talk to me and check out my goodies (TABLE goodies, thank you very much!) The fine folks running TCAF love comics and the comic community so much that they want to make it accessible to absolutely everyone, and I think this is a big part of what makes this particular festival so special. That and the fact that EVERYONE (almost everyone) EVERYONE comes to TCAF. Just take a look at the crazy packed guest and exhibitor list from this year. I even got to meet Adventure Time creator Pen Ward briefly at an after party and watched gleefully as he honed in on my friend Harry, shook his hand for a solid three minutes and made non-stop beat boxing sounds, it was pure awkward delight!

 (C'est moi and my booth buddy Adriana Blake grinning up a storm at table #123 )

So many comic friends from all over the world came to visit, many I've known for years either in person or through the interwebs, and it was FAN-doodley-TASTIC to hang out and catch up with so many of them. Even so, a weekend is barely enough time for meet ups, multiple breakfasts, and party crashing... Which is why I'm hoping some day TCAF will become an insane week-long-festival of geeky debauchery... or hell, why not make it all year round!

And so (don't worry I'm wrapping up here) to conclude, TCAF was a big success. I'd visited before but this was my first time exhibiting and I can't wait to do it again. TCAF also wraps up my indie-comic tour which was mostly an experiment to see what these conventions were all about (as I barely had anything to exhibit) and I have to say...Mocca, Stumptown and TCAF, I had an absolute blast. I love going to these things, and it's something I definitely want to keep doing. Now I just have to make NEW STUFF to actually exhibit...

(My modest but much loved TCAF haul... which includes gift arts from amazing artist friends Stephanie Ramirez, Brianne Drouhard and Kali Fontecchio)

 So it's back to my studio loft to hunch over the drawing desk/computer as a wiser more inspired Kt, and get cracking on a few of those projects I've left simmering too long on the ol' backburners. Thank you to everyone who came by my table to say hello at each indie con! Thank you to the people who make these conventions run smooth and fabulous every year! Thank you to my friends and fellow artists for continuing to inspire me and make me feel horrifically inept at drawing which only makes me have to work harder. I love you all! Cheers!

(Farewell TCAF, until we meet again and fall in love once more next spring!)

Musings from my Comic Fest Adventure Time

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've finally gotten some time to sit down and breath after a stretch of post-travel blahs, Easter family madness and the insanity that is "oh gawd, WHY DIDN'T I FILE THESE TAXES SOONER!???"- and thought I'd take a moment to do a little write up about Mocca and Stumptown!  If this is your first time hearing those words, no I'm not talking coffee (though I drank plenty of that!) I spent two weeks in the US early this month attending indie comic festivals on both coasts. Mocca Comics Fest took place April 9-10 in NYC and Stumptown Comics Fest happened April 16-17 in Portland, Oregon.
RESULTS! I had an absolutely brilliant time in the States; the people of New York and Portland were warm, inviting and completely charming. And that's not even counting the amazing people I met on the convention floor! I came home with a whole bundle of mini-comic-goodies that were traded, gifted and sometimes thrown at me while the lovely artist shyly scampered away! Here's photographic evidence of my mini-comic haul:
Thank you so much gang!! I keep them in a box beside my bed so I have something awesome to read before sleepy time.
I also wanted to give a shout out to Karen Demsko who gave me an honest to goodness GOODY BASKET at Mocca! Thank you Karen!
My glee could not be contained, so I spread bubbles all over Manhattan and Brooklyn.
I also want to thank my fantastic table mates at both conventions. Joy Ang , Sam Bradley and Sarah White were kind enough to invite me and my man Gerry to squish alongside them at MOCCA and help debut the second volume of The Anthology Project. And what a debut it was- all copies of book 01 and 02 were completely sold out by Sunday afternoon! (alas I don't have any pictures of our table D: )
At Stumptown I tabled with the incredibly talented Sam Alden who was one of my ACA comic camp buddies and is working on a beautiful book titled "Eighth Grade." Keep an eye out for that one!
(Our community table: Pictured here are Sam Alden and ACA comic starlet Lilly Moore! Not pictured but part of our community table are Thi Bui, Chris Hunt and Sean Pryor.)
(Here's a picture I just had to share because it's ridiculously fun and I was pleased as punch to finally meet Jen Vaughn (comic artist and writer for The Beat) in person.)
Alas that I don't have more pictures, there were so many amazing people that I got to meet and hang out with but I'm afraid if I try to name them all I'll ultimately leave someone out. So instead I'll say THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR BEING AWESOME!!!
 I cannot recommend these conventions highly enough, if you're local or just passing through town, check them out next spring. There are so many amazing creators and creations to meet and enjoy.
 Aaaand... yeah! Okay, I said it'd be a short blog post, but this is definitely not the end of my travel adventures. The comic conventions took place on the weekends and SO MUCH MORE happened in between...
*cough*
*cough*
... but I may save those stories for a travel comic I'm going to be working on with a couple of the amazingly talented folks from The Anthology Project. Either way, you'll hear it from me first here on the ol' blog.
Cheers!
Wizard World write up AND MORE CONS!
So another con has come and gone, and I have to say despite suffering through the worst stages of a nasty cold-turned-laryngitis I had a very swell time! Seeing comic friends from near and far is always the greatest pleasure I get from conventions, and it was super awesome to make new acquaintances and meet a bunch of lovely, lovely readers and fans of my work. Thank you kindly to everyone who came by the table to chat, pick up prints, or even take a quick peek and shyly scamper away!
(Table buddy Adriana Blake, myself, and my brother Shaggy Shan being accosted by a member of Toronto's elite  501st Stormtrooper Legion)
:sunnysideup: Tdot Comics, a new Toronto focused comic community, did a small write up as well (with a pic of our table [link] ). I was able to meet Tdot founder Alice Quinn very briefly, but I'm incredibly excited to see where Tdot is going and to be a part of a larger community of comic creators (and lovers) in the GTA!
:sunnysideup: My brother edited together this fun, short video taken at the con (which includes the results to a small contest I threw on twitter to win a commission) and some over-the-shoulder step-by-step process of me drawing and inking another commission... with frog voice! WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE: :star: [link] :star:
:sunnysideup: As I mentioned earlier, 100% of all purchases of my fanart prints will go directly to benefit relief efforts in Japan, and I was able to raise a grand total of $82! I'd mentioned on twitter that my donation would go to "Doctors without Borders" but was also informed that "Red Cross" donations had a more direct impact on Japan specifically. With all the amazing work Doctors without Borders do I didn't want to just suddenly leave them out so I decided to split the proceeds 50/50 between both organizations. Thank you so much to everyone who bought a fanart and helped out!
And that's about it for now, I'm going to bunker down and finish up a few more projects before I travel off to the states with my darling Ger, and if you're at Mocca or Stumptown please come find me and say hello! :)
I'm going to some comic cons! How about you?
Many pardons for my lack of updates and responses, it's been a pretty busy couple of months! I just wrapped on two large projects, one a big storyboard contract and the other a short comic (written by my brother Shaggy and illustrated by myself) for the very last book in the "Flight" Anthology! Flight's moving in a different direction, the folks behind it are starting up a series called "Explorer" aimed at a younger audience, so they'll still be around making kick ass stories, but the anthology series knows as "Flight" will be over.  I'm honored to have been invited to take part in the last couple books and cannot WAIT until Flight 8 comes out in print, there are so many gorgeous comics in this one, you will NOT be disappointed,  hooo haw.
And to celebrate here's another weird photo of my roommate's cat posing with the inked pages (and enticing you to pick up a copy of 'Flight 8' this summer with her wiley wiles) I had a couple comic friends smack me over the head for 'abusing' my original artwork like this BUT SHE WAS ONLY ON IT FOR A MINUTE!
MORE COMIC NEWS! The "Anthology Project" book I'm also apart of is in the process of being printed and should soon be shipped out to the folks who ordered them through kickstarter, and available at upcoming comic conventions. Another stunning book full of great stories and gorgeous art, I'll keep you guys updated for when it comes out! AND SPEAKING OF CONVENTIONS...
:sunnysideup: CONVENTIONS I WILL BE EXHIBITING AT! :sunnysideup:
:star:March 18-20 WIZARD WORLD (Toronto) [link] I'll be sharing a table with my gal pal and fellow webcomic-er :iconadriana7: so swing on by and say "hi!"
:star: April 9-10 MOCCA Festival (New York) [link] I'll be set up with the crew of :icontheanthologyproject: to promote the new book! So swing on by and say "yo!"
So here's my question for you guys, what kinds of things would you like to see from my at a convention? I'll be bringing a couple portfolios of original art work (one full of my printed comic work and illustrations, and one full of my original Shrub Monkeys comics drawings). Aside from having prints on hand of my existing artwork, I'm looking to put together a couple con-exclusive mini comics and some new prints. A couple friends are telling me NOW IS THE TIME for me to compile all the Shrub Monkeys comics into a book. Do these sound like things you guys might be interested in? What kind of extras would you like to see in a Shrub Monkeys book? Drop me a line in the comments if you have any tips or pointers or suggestions! :)
Hope February's been treating you guys fine and dandy!
~Katie
